The song of yore

A song soars through the air
A tune here and a tune there
Its rhythm’s easy march
In harmony with mine heart

Words once familiar
Tremulous, my lips whisper
The song I knew so well
Enfolds me again in its spell

With wonder, I recall
The effortlessness of it all
And wish for just one note
That my stifled breath can hold

As dusk draws night near
Music’s distant refrains, I hear
And Silence, his stern cousin
Mutely walks with me onwards
