Yellow-brown autumn leaves painstakingly raked, lie invitingly in a pile. Two little girls walk by. The younger one stops, looks at it and jumps in, calling her sibling to join her. The elder one looks primly around, but there’s no known face in sight to admonish them. A momentary gleam lights up her eyes, and she jumps in too. After a fair amount of wrestling, the tired two lie content, almost submerged in a golden layer of leaves, glistening in the setting sun. The old caretaker shuffles slowly back to the garage to get his rake again, but the smile, softening his gray eyes, renders his tired gait invisible, to me.
